Day 1 - DEPART USA.

Board your overnight flight.

Day 2 - ROME.

Welcome to Rome! Insight's Airport Shuttle Service departs Rome's Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport for your tour hotel at 09:30, 12:30 & 15:30. Tonight, join us for a Welcome Drink.

Days 3 & 4 - ROME.

First up, an included orientation drive shows you many of Rome's top highlights to help you plan your sightseeing. Alight outside the Colosseum. From here Rome's archaeological wealth lies before you. Walk in the steps of Julius Caesar or take the modern day Metro, which will whisk you to other parts of the city. If you'd rather a local expert help you piece together Rome's many wonders, then consider the following...(BB)

  • One day is dedicated to the 'Vatican & Tivoli Experience' Here a resident expert walks you through the vast St Peter's Basilica before touring the Papal apartments and dungeons at Castel Sant'Angelo. Later, drive up to the hilltop town of Tivoli to visit the amazing water gardens of the Villa d'Este - an oasis of cool tranquillity amid the bustle of modern life! During the course of the day you'll also enjoy included refreshments and a delicious typical Roman lunch.
  • On the following day there is the 'Experience of Ancient Rome' where you ascend the Capitoline Hill and visit the Forum, former heart of the Roman Empire. After a refreshing 'gelato' you'll also visit the massive Colosseum, Palatine Hill and well preserved Pantheon and the Catacombs of the Appian Way, where you'll gain an insight to a subterranean world.

As twilight descends, Rome's monuments, squares and churches take on a different character. For a romantic view over the city at sunset head for Pincio Gardens or join the locals for a promenade around the illuminated Piazza Navona?

Day 5 - ROME - FLORENCE.

Ascend the Apennine mountains to Assisi, a stone-built town sprawling over the steep hillside. Perhaps visit the basilica to see the frescoes of Giotto? Continue through the vineyards of the Chianti region to Renaissance Florence.

Day 6 - FLORENCE.

his morning accompany your Tour Director to Santa Croce square in the city centre. The tombs of Michelangelo and Galileo are located in the adjoining Basilica, a great place to launch your exploration of the city. Everything is easily reached on foot. The choice is yours, but don't miss the museums and galleries housing some of the world's most famous works of art.(BB)

  • Perhaps immerse yourself in the riches of the Renaissance with our 'Florence Experience'. You'll meet Michelangelo's original 'David', visit the Uffizi to see Botticelli's 'Birth of Venus', see the massive Cathedral, belltower and Baptistery, and visit the open-air gallery in Signoria Square. A special day made complete by sipping an 'aperitivo' and tasting a typical Tuscan 'crostini'.

Day 7 - FLORENCE - VENICE.

Leave Florence and head for Italy's gastronomic capital of Bologna. See Giambologna's Neptune Fountain and the Old Town. Time to savour the local specialties in the trattorias and ristoranti before continuing to your hotel on the trendy Venice Lido.

Day 8 - VENICE.

Sit back in your private launch and enjoy your introduction to this unique city of palaces, canals and gondolas. Disembark near the Bridge of Sighs before standing in awe at the marble arcades of Piazza San Marco. You could spend the rest of the day right here if you like; the Basilica of St Mark, belltower and Doges' Palace are all worth a visit. Or you may prefer to lose yourself in the back lanes and small squares known as 'campi'. (BB)

  • Distilling the riches of Venice into a day is difficult, but our 'Venice Experience' does exactly that. A private guided tour shows you the glistening interior of the Basilica of San Marco. Then to the Doge's Palace with its state-rooms and spectacular paintings. Continue through the Bridge of Sighs to the prison from which Casanova escaped! Later, take to the water once more to explore the Venetian lagoon. The colourful island of Burano is a photographer's paradise, famous for its lace and leaning campanile. Enjoy a superb lunch sampling the local specialities, with wine, before cruising back to the fashionable Lido.>

As evening falls, and the day-trippers have returned to the mainland, you could board a vaporetto (waterbus) and return to St Mark's Square where music fills the air and stars fill the sky. What ever you do, Venice by night is just magical!

Day 9 - VENICE - LUCERNE.

Head for the resort of Lugano, amidst the beautiful Lake District. Continue into the heart of the Swiss Alps, passing through the Saint Gotthard Tunnel, then alongside towering mountains and past rushing torrents, down to scenic Lake Lucerne. On arrival, see Lucerne's proud Lion Monument, dedicated to the Swiss Guards massacred defending
the King during the French Revolution.

Day 10 - LUCERNE.

Use your free time to to shop for chocolate or a Swiss watch, stroll across the covered Chapel Bridge and see the baroque Jesuit church.

  • Alternatively, leave everything up to us on our 'Lucerne Experience'. A guided sightseeing tour shows you the Old Town Hall, the Weinmarkt, the covered Spreuerbrücke with its paintings under the roof, and the Kapellbrücke. Next a cable car whisks you up the summit of Mount Pilatus, offering a shining view of Lake Lucerne and surrounding peaks. Then descend by the steepest cogwheel railway in the world to Alpnachstad. Return to Lucerne via a cruise on the serene lake surrounded by some of the Alps most breathtaking landscapes.

The town of Lucerne has many dinner options so check with your Tour Director if you would like some suggestions.

Day 11 - RETURN TO USA.
